James Edward Allen is a famous American country music singer and songwriter. In 2021, he won the Country Music Association Award for New Artist of the Year, the second black artist to do so since Darius Rucker in 2009. He is the son of country singer Willie Lee and the grandson of Johnny Cash. Allen was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. After moving to Nashville in the early 1970s, Allen began performing in his mother's church, and later in a gospel group. His music is characterized by a Southern drawl, gospel-influenced vocal harmonies, blues-based riffs, Southern twang, honky-tonk piano, and soulful singing, as well as a love of old-time country.

As a singer, his music has been described as "soul-soaked and soul-satisfying" by The New York Times. His songs have also been compared to Hank Williams, Hank Sr. & the Mamas, and The Papas.
